We help our clients innovate by building innovation capacity, providing insight, and accelerating technology from lab to market. Anchored within a non-profit research institute, the Innovation Advisors deliver consulting services and analyses that are rooted in research.


RTI’s Innovation Advisors is on the forefront of helping to address environmental sustainability challenges for commercial and federal clients. Examples of our work include finding alternatives to chemicals of concern, addressing complex challenges with recycling, or finding markets for climate tech. Our work is fast-paced, challenging, and varied. You will hone your consulting skills through conducting primary and secondary market research, analyzing and synthesizing insights, and delivering these insights to clients. This consulting position is not lab-based, but team members will apply their technical expertise to address clients’ needs. In this role, you may apply a sustainability lens to multiple sectors, but with a particular focus on consumer goods, food and beverage, and medical technology.

The analyst will work alongside and receive mentorship by the Innovation Advisors team to conduct tasks that are often outside the scope of a candidate’s previous study or experience. The analyst will:

  • Conduct research using secondary resources (published company information, SEC filings, scholarly journals, patent databases, trade literature, and news articles), as well as primary resources (interviews)
  • Provide insightful analysis of opportunities identified during primary and secondary research, in written and oral format
  • Share insights in written and oral format within the IA team, as well as with clients
  • Conduct research in a wide range of technology areas and industries
  • Apply technical acumen and scientific skills to evaluate a variety of technologies
  • Employ commercialization and innovation-related frameworks, such as the business model canvas and value proposition testing, to new technologies



  • Bachelor’s degree with at least one year of work experience, OR recent master’s or PhD graduate in a science or engineering discipline
  •  Career interest in innovation, technology transfer and commercialization, and consulting
  •  Demonstrated comfort and willingness to regularly work outside the scope of the candidate’s technical field of study
  • Exceptional written and oral communication, time management, analytical skills
  • Team-centric thinking and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in typical computer applications such as the MS Office Suite, including Teams, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Orientation towards detail and an ability to work both independently and collaboratively


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Area of study includes chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer science, environmental studies, or closely related discipline with strong fundamental knowledge base in plastics recycling
  • Work experience, if applicable, aligns with one (or more) of the following:

o   Client engagement

o   Human-centered design

o   Value proposition testing through primary research

o   Market sizing and forecasting

The anticipated pay range for this role is listed below. Our pay ranges represent national averages and may vary by location as a geographic differential may be applied to some locations within the United States.
